St. John’s College High School senior Derrick Thomas, (Upper Marlboro, Md.) who was named to the All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference First Team last month, will continue his basketball career at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Thomas signed his National Letter of Intent on Monday at St. John’s.
Along with his All-WCAC honor, Thomas was named to the Washington Post All-Metro team and participated in the 36th annual Capital Classic All-Star Game at American University’s Bender Arena. Thomas, who was named to the all-tournament team, helped lead the Capital All-Stars to a 129-98 win over U.S. All Stars by scoring 16 points.
Thomas had several high-scoring games for the Cadets during the 2008-09 season. He scored 26 points in a loss to Bishop McNamara and totaled 25 points in a win against St. Mary’s Ryken. Thomas also tallied 20 points in a WCAC Tournament win over Bishop Ireton.
Thomas is the first St. John’s boys basketball student-athlete to sign a Division I National Letter of Intent since 2007 when Chris Wright (Georgetown) and Vlad Moldoveanu (George Mason) decided to continue their basketball careers.
