Senior Ricky Baier continues to be one of a number of Ireton wrestlers having a superb season for the VISAA's top-ranked Cardinals

Bishop Ireton wrestlers brought the team record to 8-1 with two victories against WCAC foes St. Johns and St. Mary’s Ryken earlier in the week and two victories against Virginia Independent School rivals,  Richmond’s  Collegiate and Fork Union Military Academy on Saturday.  On both of the two outings spectators were treated to several exhibition matches that provided a sneak peek at a new varsity heavy weight wrestler as well as some ofthe Cardinals’ junior varsity wrestlers.

In the first meet of the week against the St. John’s Cadets, the Bishop Ireton Cardinals achieved a decisive 61-15 victory with individual wins from all but two of our wrestlers and seven of those by pin.  Setting the pace with the first pin of the match was sophomore Andrew Baehre wrestling at 135lbs, who pinned his opponent in 5:48. This was followed by pins from senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 4:46; junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215lbs in 1:03; senior Elliot Mondragon at 103lbs in :39; junior Darcy Gomez at 112lbs in 1:02; senior Arslan Ryspekov in :36 at 119lbs; and sophomore Jeff Severini at 125lbs in 2:48. Additional wins were also achieved by junior Ben Nagao at 152llbs with a 11-1 major decision; Gibson Hawk at 160llbs with a 8-2 decision; and two wins by forfeit from sophomore Nick Womach at 130lbs and Michael Rodriguez at 145lbs. Fastest pin of the match goes to Arslan Ryspekov who achieved his fastest career pin in :36, breaking his previous record of :54 from last year. Ireton spectators were treated to several exhibition matches from freshman Connor Reilly, senior James Oliva, junior Matt Dubow, and our new varsity 285lb wrestler Jimmy Keegan, who pinned his opponent in his first wrestling competition.

The Cardinals 51-24 win against the St. Marys Ryken Knights was slightly more hard fought, but equally as satisfying as the grapplers achieved nine wins, five of which were by pin. Achieving pins for Ireton were senior Aslan Ryspekov at 119lbs in 1:36; sophomore Nick Womach at 130lbs in 5:26; senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 4:35; junior Andrew Bladen at 171lbs in 1:31; and junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215lbs in 2:35. Additional wins included that from junior Michael Rodriguez, with a 15-11 decision and three wins by forfeit from senior Elliot Mondragon, junior Darcy Gomez, and junior Ben Nagao. The fastest pin of the competition was achieved by Andrew Bladen, who pinned his opponent in 1:31.

Our snowy trek to Fork Union, VA on Saturday was rewarded by the addition of two more wins to increasingly successful record.   Cardinal grapplers were most impressive in their 63-12 win and first competition of the day against the Fork Union Military Academy Blue Devils.  In that match up the Cards won eleven individual matches, with seven earned by pin.   Setting the pace with pins was senior Elliot Mondragon in :20, Darcy Gomez in :36, Andrew Baehre in 1:26, Ricky Baier in :43, sophomore Tommy Dean at 145lbs in 1:04, junior Michael Rodriguez wrestling up at 152lbs in 3:09, and junior Andrew Bladen at 171lbs in 5:12. Additional wins were earned by sophomore Nick Womach with a 10-5 decision; junior Andrew Lutterloh with a 8-6 decision, and a win by forfeit from Arslan Ryspekov. The fastest pin of the match was accomplished by Elliot Mondragon in :20. Following this match, Connor Bevridge, Aiden Brookshir, Matt Dubow, Tommy Kelly, James Oliva, and Connor Reilly all showcased their talent in exhibition matches, all but two of which were won.
In our second match of the day the Cards once again were victorious with a 51-22 win against the Richmond’s Collegiate Cougars, featuring the VISAA’s first and second ranked teams.   In this match nine of our wrestlers won their individual matches, with five by pins.   Setting the pace with a pin in the first bout of this match was junior Darcy Gomez at 112lbs who pinned his opponent in :52.   Following Darcy’s lead with pins were sophomore Nick Womach at 130lbs in 5:06, sophomore Andrew Baehre at 135 in :49, senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 3:44, and senior Elliot Mondragon at 103lbs who again achieved the fastest pin of the match in :19.

The Cardinals continue to impress with legions of supporters who travel to back the redbirds, including the parents who came out to support the wrestlers, especially those who took the snowy trek out to Fork Union on Saturday.
The week ahead will be very busy for Ireton matmen as they will have matches against seven schools. Those matches will start on Wednesday (1/12/2011) with a tri-meet against WCAC rivals the Gonzaga Eagles and the Bishop McNamara Mustangs. Wrestling begins at 5:00pm in Godley Gym. On Thursday (1/13/2011), our grapplers will travel to Norfolk, VA for matches against York High School and the Norfolk Academy Bulldogs.   Wrestling will begin around 4:30pm at Norfolk Academy High School (1585 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502). The upcoming competitions will be highlighted by the Alexandria City Duals on Friday (1/14/2011) against St. Stephens St. Agnes, Episcopal, and T.C. Williams High Schools.  Wrestling will begin at 4:30pm at Episcopal High School (1200 North Quaker Lane, Alexandria).
