Cardinals’ girls tennis upend defending WCAC champs, 5-4

Senior Mary Rose White has been a 4-year contributor to varsity tennis.

An old sports saying is that “you don’t have to always be ahead if you have the heart to come from behind”.  Katie Sloper’s Cardinals lived the message Friday when they dumped PVI, the WCAC’s reining girls tennis champs, 5-4 in Fairfax.

The match was postponed 24 hours due to rain but when the Cardinals arrived at Fairfax High School, they were ready to play.  Falling behind 2-4 after the first 6 individual matches, the girls regrouped to sweep the three doubles matches and win the day, 5-4.

Seniors Mary Rose White and  Christy Macey played #1 doubles, winning 8-3. Their match was the deciding match and first match for freshman Kirsten Ann Parker and junior Cristina Spinetto, who took the #3 doubles, 8-6.

“We have put in a lot of time and effort into our doubles with strategies and improving our confidence up at the net. This was very beneficial when it came down to taking all doubles. The girls have great patience and focus when it came down to pressured situations.” praised head coach Katie Sloper, whose squads have engineered some memorable wins.

Last season Sloper’s girls ended a 5-year WCAC dual match winning streak when they topped St Johns College High School 5-4. The win over the defending champions opened the WCAC season for the Cardinals.
