Cardinals win WCAC opener in Girls Soccer, 5-2

The nonconference portion of a team’s schedule is designed to harden the squad for the rigors of WCAC conference play. Rival Paul VI Catholic visited Fannon Field looking to see if the Cardinals girls soccer team was ready to contend for the upper echelon of the elite conference.  “We didn’t play our best soccer today,” commented Bishop Ireton’s first year coach, Gino Leon, “but we did get a win against a good team”.

The Cardinals drew first blood when a great lead pass to senior all conference forward Katrina Guillou led to Ireton’s first goal with 34:06 remaining in the first half.  Shortly thereafter, Ciana Puglise scored Ireton’s second goal in the 12th minute of play to expand the lead to 2-0.

PVI countered almost immediately as the Cardinals momentarily looked somewhat flat-footed and disorganized in their defensive end and junior Cali Hutson found the back of the net to trim the lead to 2-1.  Just over 5 minutes later however, the Cardinals regained the two goal margin when sophomore Meaghan Reilly tallied her first goal in WCAC action.

The second half saw Panther senior Danielle Guenbaum get by the Cardinals goalkeeper for an easy lay up to close the margin to 3-2 with about 15 minutes gone. Guillou took another perfectly led pass to beat the PVI defense to put Ireton up 4-2 with 16 minutes remaining and her perfect corner kick resulted Karina Azar’s header with seconds left in the contest to close the game 5-2.

The JV teams struggled to a 0-0 tie in the nightcap and will have the week off as the varsity roadtrip on Friday is a one team affair.  The Cardinals travel to St James for a varsity only contest, start time is 5:30pm at St James.
