After a season-opening setback to powerhouse Episcopal, Cardinals have duel wins over PVI, Good Counsel to open WCAC dual meet season.

Bishop Ireton ran their conference win streak to two with a 6-3 dual match win over Good Counsel at the Olney. “They were ready and aggressive after a great win against PVI.” commented head coach, Katie Sloper-Johnson.  Ireton started well, going 4-2 in singles.  First match wins of the season were #5 senior Megan Fyffe at (8-2) and #3 senior Christy Macey (8-3).

The key match of the afternoon was Monica Zakaria playing #1 senior Olivia Hogan (WCAC #1 singles finalist),  who captured her first win against Hogan, winning 9-7.  “Monica was determined and had a game plan in how to beat her opponent.  That was a huge win for her and the entire team.” praised the Cardinal mentor.

Bishop Ireton took 2 of the 3 doubles with the help of #3 freshman Kirsten Parker and junior Cristina Spinetto (8-3) and #2 doubles team of  Zakaria and junior Natalia Spinetto (8-2).  “The girls have been working on anticipating their opponents next shot and being there for the winning shot.” explained Sloper-Johnson and the work is obviously paying off for the redbirds, who improved to 2-1 in dual play, 2-0 in the WCAC.

The Cardinals host Elizabeth Seton Thursday at 4pm on the Carl Sandberg Middle School courts.
