Bishop Ireton ran their conference win streak to two with a 6-3 dual match win over Good Counsel at the Olney. “They were ready and aggressive after a great win against PVI.” commented head coach, Katie Sloper-Johnson. Ireton started well, going 4-2 in singles. First match wins of the season were #5 senior Megan Fyffe at (8-2) and #3 senior Christy Macey (8-3).
The key match of the afternoon was Monica Zakaria playing #1 senior Olivia Hogan (WCAC #1 singles finalist), who captured her first win against Hogan, winning 9-7. “Monica was determined and had a game plan in how to beat her opponent. That was a huge win for her and the entire team.” praised the Cardinal mentor.
Bishop Ireton took 2 of the 3 doubles with the help of #3 freshman Kirsten Parker and junior Cristina Spinetto (8-3) and #2 doubles team of Zakaria and junior Natalia Spinetto (8-2). “The girls have been working on anticipating their opponents next shot and being there for the winning shot.” explained Sloper-Johnson and the work is obviously paying off for the redbirds, who improved to 2-1 in dual play, 2-0 in the WCAC.
The Cardinals host Elizabeth Seton Thursday at 4pm on the Carl Sandberg Middle School courts.
