It was a tale of two halves, the Knights coverted on their chances in a more dominating first half of play with Stephanie Paige and junior Morgan Reuther finding the net, while the Cardinals gained advantage but no goals in their second half, falling 2-0 in Alexandria.
Early, the physical O’Connell team set the pace and played in Ireton territory for long periods of the opening frame. Brenna Heney kept the Cardinals close with strong play in the goal, but the visitors tallied twice.
The second half frustrated coach Alberto Starache as the Cardinals streaked down the field with their greatest scoring opportunities, but goalkeeper Ashley Cox made a number of strong saves and key plays to deny the home team any tallies.
For Ireton there is the weekend to regroup as Coach Gino Leon’s squad entertains St Johns, who shutout O’Connell 1-0 earlier in the week, on Tuesday, then head to Olney, Maryland to challenge undefeated Good Counsel on Thursday.
