Woodrow Wilson’s Tigers spoiled the season opener for Bishop Ireton Monday night in Godley Gym, 43-30. For the Cardinals is was too many fouls, too many turnovers, and not enough field goals.
The Tigers, (1-0) led by Mercedes Suarez’s game-high 17 points, broke to a 10-2 first quarter lead and cruised into the fourth quarter with a comfortable margin. Only in the opening moments of the final quarter did the Cardinals make a run, closing to within 5 points when Danielle Hatchett made a pair of free throws at 33-28. The DC public school responded with a 9-0 run and coasted home for the win.
After trailing 10-2 in the first quarter, Ireton did pick up the scoring in the second stanza, being outscored 12-10 and going into intermission at 22-12. Wilson widened the lead to 33-19 before the Cardinals had their own run of 9-0 to threaten early in the final quarter.
Isabelle Kendall and Danielle Hatchett led the home team with 10 points each but the Cardinals managed to only shoot 20% from the field while going 10 for 15 from the free throw line. Wilson struggled from the charity stripe but compensated by going to the line 29 times, making but 13. Ireton committed 25 fouls on the evening to 18 for the visiting Tigers.
Bishop Ireton heads up the street to TC Williams for a rare matchup with the state’s largest enrolled public high school. The tripleheader begins with a 4pm freshmen contest with JV and varsity contests to follow.
