Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Hovland Header
— Robinson senior Annie Hovland slams home this corner kick from senior Jensen Smith via header in the 16th minute of the No. 1 Rams’ 2-0 win over the No. 3 Chargers.
Ein Oop to Kabelac — Churchill junior Zoe Kabelac scores one of her five goals
on an alley-oop pass from Sophia Ein. Kabelac led No. 9 Churchill to a 12-11
win over Walter Johnson.
Blackout — Bobcat senior Brittany Black struck out 11 Vikings on Thursday. Check below for more from this game.
Grimm Comeback — Centreville senior Dan Grimm makes up 20 meters in the final lap to pull away from Edison senior Leoule Degfae in the 1600-meter race at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday.

No. 10 –Liddle League
Prince William County, Virginia
— Battlefield sophomore 3B Bailey Liddle stepped to the plate with the bases full of Bobcats in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit a walk-off infield single to lift Battlefield — ranked No. 12 in the nation in the USA Today/NFCA Fast-Pitch Poll — over Loudoun Valley, 1-0, on Thursday.

No. 9 –Ley’ing Out
Prince William County, Virginia
— In a match between No. 1 Osbourn Park and No. 3 Battlefield, Yellow Jack junior goalkeeper Dylan Leygraaf leaped for this top-shelf save of a well-placed shot by Bobcat senior Franco Buzzalino to preserve a 0-0 draw in a pivotal Cedar Run District game.

No. 8 — 4-6-3 Saves Shutout
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In the bottom of the seventh inning, Patuxent senior pitcher Joey Mindick held a 3-0 lead, but allowed Chopticon to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, though, Mindick forced this 4-6-3 double play to close out his complete-game, shutout win.

No. 7 –– Rainy Goals
Jennens Excuse-Me Game-Winner

Loudoun County, Virginia
— With the score tied against Dulles District foe Potomac Falls, Broad Run sophomore Andrew Jennens hits this well-placed — albeit admittedly accidental — 52nd-minute goal, which proved the game-winner, as the Spartans went on to win, 2-1.

If You Don’t Know, Now You Knowles
Northern Region, Virginia
— In a pivotal National District match, Yorktown and No. 10 Washington-Lee were still tied, 0-0, in the 78th minute when Patriot junior Logan Knowles struck this corner kick in the air and over the General goalkeeper for the last-minute, game-winning goal.

No. 6 –Cohen, Go In
Montgomery County, Maryland
— Wildcat senior attack Daniel Cohen — with his back to a defender and the cage — whips in a blind-sided goal as Walter Johnson beat Churchill, 8-6, on Friday.

No. 5 –Bed’Gnarly
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Terrible title, I know. Bowie senior pitcher Sarah Bednarik pitched a five-inning perfect game in the Bulldogs’ 26-0 win over the Mustangs. Bednarik retired all 15 Bladensburg batters in order, recording seven strikeouts, seven ground outs and one fly out.

No. 4 –Mendoza Sparks Comeback  1  2
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Trailing by two goals to Broad Run at halftime, No. 9 Park View leaned on a masterful second half by senior Pedro Mendoza in a 3-2, come-from-behind win. Mendoza scored the equalizer on a cracking shot from 30 yards away and chipped the Spartan keeper off a K.C. Onyeador assist in overtime for the game-winner.

No. 3 –North Point No-No
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Eagle seniors Keith Ryan and Tony Raza-Montes combined for a no-hitter as North Point beat Great Mills, 9-2, on Saturday. The no-hit performance came in the second game of the first doubleheader in the Eagles’ three-year history.

No. 2 –Wahl’k-Off
Northern Region, Virginia
— West Springfield junior ace Bobby Wahl blew a two-run lead to rival South County just two innings before he came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning in a tie game. Three pitches into his at-bat, Wahl had a Wahl’k-off solo home run to lift the Spartans over the Stallions, 4-3.

No. 1 — Three Mile Eiland
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Trailing by two runs to Surrattsville and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gwynn Park senior 1B Reggie Eiland crushed this offering over the left-field wall for a walk-off grand slam and an 11-9, Yellow Jacket win.

DeMatha defeats Good Counsel in finals rematch

By Kyle Wannen
For DigitalSports.com

In a rematch of last year’s WCAC Championship game, DeMatha’a lacrosse team came out with a sense of urgency as they defeated Good Counsel 9-3 in front of Good Counsel’s home crowd.

The Stags (8-5) rebounded from a tough loss to Landon on Wednesday thanks to sophomore attackman Ryan Belka who scored four goals in the win. Fellow attackman Shaun Gibbons netted two goals of his own and the defense held Good Counsel to one goal by halftime.

“Our offense has been kind of lacking lately,” Belka said. “We needed somebody to step up so I tried to get that going.”

With the win DeMatha tied Good Counsel atop the WCAC standings and now holds the tiebreaker against the Falcons (4-7).

Washington, D.C. — The Washington Bayhawks and DigitalSports.com are proud to jointly announce a new partnership that will help further promote the game of lacrosse across the Washington, D.C. Metro area according to DigitalSports General Manager Rich Toland and Bayhawks Director of Business Development Andrew Sclama.

The ninth season of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) promises to be an exciting one as the Bayhawks, in their third season in the nation’s capital, are ready to take flight in their new home stadium: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD.

And DigitalSports — the region’s top source for local and high school sports coverage — will be there to capture the experience with game results, news stories, photos and video highlights.

“This is an exciting partnership for DigitalSports,” said Rich Toland, General Manager of the DigitalSports D.C. Metro team. “The area’s youth and high school lacrosse communities have been so supportive of DigitalSports.com in recent years, and we’re thrilled to be able to follow so many of those area athletes as they extend their playing careers with the Washington Bayhawks.”

“DigitalSports is the best place to find all of your local and high school sports coverage, and we are thrilled to be working so closely with them this season,” said Andrew Sclama, Director of Business Development for the Washington Bayhawks. “Our team is made up of many great players that call the Mid-Atlantic region home, and I know they are all excited about playing in front of the fans that followed them in high school and college.”

The Bayhawks 40-Man Roster boasts 28 players who grew up across Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and 32 players who currently live in the Mid-Atlantic region. Included in those players are local stars Andrew “Buggs” Combs (attack) and Chris Garrity (goalie). Combs graduated from St. Paul’s School in Baltimore and led the Bayhawks in goals during the 2008 season. Garrity has won MLL Goalie of the Year honors (2005), he is a four-time MLL All-Star, and he graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, MD.

“Playing in Annapolis gives us a very central location for our entire fan base to come to our games,” Sclama stated. “Lacrosse fans in this region love following their high school teams, and we know they are going to love following their old teammates and friends at the professional level this year.”

Bayhawks season tickets for all six home games are available now. Don’t miss your chance to reserve the best seats for the fastest game on two feet. Ireton Wins Inaugural Bishop’s Cup Regatta

Wind, rain and rough water were no obstacles for the Bishop Ireton Crew team on Saturday as it nearly swept archrival Bishop O’Connell in the inaugural Bishop’s Cup Regatta on the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C.

The Cardinal navy won 10 of the 12 races in a near constant rain. The men’s squad outdistanced the Knights in all six races between the teams.

The Ireton women took gold medals in the second varsity eight and four boats, as well as the novice eight and four. O’Connell’s first varsity women’s eight and four boats slipped past Ireton in the final 500 meters of both races to account for the Knights’ only points of the regatta.

Bishop Ireton Crew hosted the event at their Anacostia Boathouse home, and in a show of sportsmanship, loaned the O’Connell team five boats, allowing their teams to compete in all events. But in the end, the Cardinal navy was just too strong, winning the rainy, wind-blown event, 10-2.

The Cardinals will take on Holy Cross and Georgetown Day in their next regatta, Saturday, April 18, on the Anacostia.

Boys Lacrosse Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 15

1.    Georgetown Prep (12-2)
The Little Hoyas responded from a loss to Delbarton (N.J.) with a 14-3 whooping of Good Counsel. They have yet to be challenged by any Washington area team.

The Bulldogs struggled offensively against Landon. Before that they had won six straight games.

Two words: Peter Athens. Boosted by the St. Mary’s-Annapolis transfer, the Hurricanes are a force to be reckoned with in Southern Maryland.

Prep shakes off loss with big win over Good Counsel

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Deep down, Georgetown Prep’s loss to Delbarton on Saturday doesn’t really hurt that much. Delbarton is an out-of-state nationally-ranked foe, far from a conference rival.

But for as good as the Little Hoyas are yet again this year, any loss stings.

Georgetown Prep eased its pain and more Tuesday evening with a 14-3 win over Good Counsel, another out-of-conference foe this time in the Hoyas’ own county.

“We just want to win every game,” Prep senior Billy Gribbin said. “We just wanted to forget about Saturday. That one was really rough.”

Penn State-bound Gribbin scored three goals and notched a pair of assists. Junior Mike Pirone (Denver) notched three goals as well and Nick Perfido also notched two.

Prep (12-2), who is ranked No. 5 nationally by LaxPower, took an 8-0 lead to start the game and was never threatened by Good Counsel (4-5), who is currently in first place in the WCAC.

In the process, the Little Hoyas showed just how talented its offense can be. Georgetown Prep cranked out 32 shots in the first half alone, in part because the Little Hoyas dominated the faceoff circle.

The score could have been worse had Falcons goalie Patrick McEnerney not had another standout game with 12 saves.

“We’ve got a lot of talent on this team,” Pirone said. “When we play well it’s a kick-*** offense.”

Delbarton, New Jersey’s second-highest ranked team, handed the Little Hoyas an 8-3 loss. Georgetown Prep trailed 5-3 with five minutes left but tried to turn up the pressure and got burnt.

“We definitely were humbled on Saturday,” Prep Coach Kevin Giblin said.

Giblin and the Little Hoyas are trying to focus less on such games, however. Giblin said that there was perhaps a little too much emphasis on the out-of-league games in years pass, thinking those games would prepare Georgetown Prep for its conference schedule.

Prep has stumbled against its IAC competition somewhat in past years. The past two years the Little Hoyas fell to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes in the IAC tournament semifinals. In 2007 it meant they had to share the overall title with St. Albans. In 2008 it cost them a shot altogether.

This season the Little Hoyas are 2-0 in the IAC thus far with a 14-2 win over Bullis and 12-3 victory against St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes. Georgetown Prep will face St. Albans Thursday.

“I think it’s more motivation coming out with those losses the past two years,” Pirone said. “We’re not going to let that happen this year. Nothing is going to stop us.”
