Field Hockey races past School without Walls

Cardinals ended a 4-game skid with a win over the Penguins Friday.

The Cardinal field hockey team evened their season record at 4-4 and stopped a four-game losing skid with an overwhelming 7-0 win over the School Without Walls Penguins Friday on Fannon Field.

Ireton’s Bobbie Burchard and Grace Fletcher each scored a pair of goals while Jenny Travis, Kat Doolin, and Kelly Mathews added tallies in the contest.

The redbirds owned a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners in the game and an 18-4 lead in shots.  Anna Fracasso and Taylor Bryntenson combined to shutout the Washington DC private school.

The Cardinals return to WCAC play on Monday when they host Good Counsel, one of the league’s strongest programs. Varsity starts at 4pm and the JV contest will follow.

DeMatha gets by Cardinal boys soccer, 2-0

Andrew Perham, above, has played well in goal for the Cardinals early in the 2013 campaign.

DeMatha remains a yardstick for excellence in the WCAC and the Cardinals demonstrated that they are moving closer to challenging the Conference’s upper echelon with a physical 2-0 loss on Witter Street Field.  After blasting Archbishop Carroll 7-0 earlier and losing a city rivalry match to a strong St Stephens/St Agnes squad 4-2 to end last week, the Cardinals returned to league play on Tuesday.

The Stags’ Koby Oseiwusu got the visitors on the board about 7 minutes into the contest with a knuckling 20 meter shot that eluded the Cardinals’ Andrew Perham. Tyler Fields made it 2-0 with 16:40 remaining to play in the opening half of play on a neatly threaded pass deep the Ireton box.

Ireton’s best scoring opportunity came at 26:26 remaining in the game when Paul Poling’s header was screaming  under the crossbar, only to be knocked away at the last moment by the DeMatha keeper.   It epitomized the strong second half the Cardinals played on a beautiful fall afternoon with the temperatures in the mid-70’s. The Cardinals had their shots and pressed the visiting Stags, but could not find the back of the net in the 80 minutes of play.

Bishop Ireton returns to action on Friday when the Cardinals travel to The Heights School for a doubleheader. JV is slated for a 3:30 kickoff with the varsity contest set for 5:15.
