Boys’ Lax hosts annual spring Alumni game

On Saturday, 16 May 15, seventeen BI Men’s Lacrosse Alumni returned to Fannon Field to watch and participate in the 6th Annual Chris Delaware Memorial Alumni vs. Varsity Lacrosse game.

Returning coaches included BI’s first Men’s Lax coach, Francisco Calabrese (1980-81) and Joey Kestermann (2005-09). Returning players included Kevin Abbed (14), Will Chastain (13), Jerome Dacurawat (14), Nick Delaware (02), Stephen Gerke (14), Tommy Kestermann (10), Martin Klunder (14), Brian O’Donnell (08), Chris Petroff (09), Joe Ready (14), Brendan Reilly (08), Casey Shannon (08), Tommy Skelly (08) Phil Thomas (14) and Tyler Zimmer (03). They were supported by many enthusiastic Alumni Parents in the stands.

Alumni parent Bill Gerke took some great pictures of the game. Please go to  https://www.flickr.com/gp/97227969@N07/87Jp5E to view them.

Before the game, six rising BI Freshmen joined members of the BI JV and Varsity teams to run through some drills, review wall ball work and discuss summer camps and training. Varsity Head Coach Brandon Rose welcomed parents and student athletes to BI and the Men’s Lacrosse program. Many other rising frosh were unable to attend because of youth lax games.

After the game, Coach Calabrese spoke to all the players, noting how the game and the program had changed. Coach Mike Blaine took a few minutes to remember Chris Delaware. Chris was a great friend, athlete and lacrosse player at BI and Lynchburg College. After graduating from Lynchburg, Chris returned to BI with Joey Kestermann to coach lacrosse until his sudden death. Chris was a great Coach and role model. He had a positive influence over everyone he met. He is greatly missed!

The BI Alumni office and current BI Men’s lax parents hosted a delicious tailgate in the Resource Center after the game.

The 7th Annual Chris Delaware Memorial Alumni vs Varsity Lacrosse game is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, 21 May 16. Start time to be determined. Please save the date and plan to join us next year.

National regattas cap Cardinal rowing season

615May 15, 16 saw the Bishop Ireton rowers hit the road for the first of two national level regattas held in Philadelphia area.  First, the team competed in the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia (the world’s largest high school regatta) where the Men’s Varsity 4 finished in 15th place (out of 60 boats) overall. The Women’s Varsity 4 finished in 16th place overall in a field of 57 boats. The Cardinals’  women’s double as well as the women’s novice quad rowed hard, but did not advance to the semi-finals.

Bishop Ireton rowed in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, May 22, 23  at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Regatta where both the men’s and women’s Varsity 4 boats competed hard. They both were behind in their opening heats in fifth place and then finished strong in the last five hundred meters to come in third.

This sent them to the repechage round instead of going straight to semi-finals. In their repechage heat for the women, they ended up in a very tight race pulling very hard at the end to finish first. The men’s boat also was in a tight race and ended second in a close finish. The two boats then advanced to semi-finals where they fell short and did not advance to finals. The women’s boat finished 18th overall and the men’s boat finished 17th overall. Bishop Ireton made a good, strong showing after a season filled with adversity.

We are very proud of our entire team and look forward to a strong group of men and women returning to BI Crew next year!623
