Softball: Centreville 3, O’Connell 2

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links to the left to access a full photo gallery, dozens of video highlights and a video interview with Wildcat senior standout Jessica Ferrick!

Centreville Coach Rich Ferrick stood with his assistant coaches as his team circled up and took a seat in the outfield grass a few feet away from him.

The girls chatted and giggled with delight until Ferrick, after several minutes, turned to face them.

When quiet finally settled over them, Ferrick shook his head and said simply: “Wow.”

The giggling returned, and a few celebratory cheers followed.

“I don’t know what to say … and that doesn’t usually happen,” continued Ferrick, whose team rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat traditional WCAC powerhouse O’Connell, 3-2. “But understand that we’ve said from Day 1 that the potential here is just limitless. You guys can do anything you put your minds to.

“That is a very good team over there that you just beat. So you know you can do it. It’s all about heart and determination … and you had it tonight.”

Trailing 2-0 entering the final half-inning of play, the Wildcats (12-5 overall) showed incredible patience at the plate.

Freshman second baseman Courtney Burke led off the inning with a walk, junior first baseman Katie Sokol reached on an error and sophomore pinch hitter Karen Johnson singled to shallow right field to load the bases with no outs. Freshman right fielder Kara Love — the team’s No. 9 batter — then walked to score Centreville’s first run of the game.

Longtime Knights’ Coach Tommy Orndorff, whose team slipped to 15-3, made a pitching change, but the result was more of the same. Centreville senior catcher Victoria Marvin, the Wildcats’ leadoff batter, walked in the next at-bat to plate the game-tying run.

That’s when things got even more tense.

Wildcat freshman shortstop Lexi Murdock hit a ground ball back to reliever Sarah Eidt in the pitching circle and Eidt not only got the force out at home plate, but O’Connell sophomore catcher Sophie Giaquinto also threw Murdock out at first base to complete the double-play.

Centreville sophomore left fielder Cara Donovan walked in the next at-bat to again load the bases … this time, though, with two outs.

Next at the plate — and with everything on the line — was Wildcat senior pitcher Jessica Ferrick. Ferrick, the team’s clean-up batter, had singled in her first at-bat, struck out in her second and was intentionally walked in her third.

“When it’s your kid getting up to the plate it’s a whole different feeling,” Coach Ferrick said of his daughter. “And you’re just praying the poor kid comes through because you know how they’re going to feel when they get home if they don’t … and you’ve got to live with them.

“But then again, you want your kid to be there when something good happens, too. So you want them to have that kind of opportunity.”

And Jessica Ferrick certainly made the most of it.

Ferrick fired a hard-hit, ground ball up the middle to score the game-winning run, and was embraced first by Marvin and then by the rest of her teammates.

Her father offered only a firm fist pump in his daughters’ direction.

“With this group I don’t know what to think sometimes,” Coach Ferrick said. “They’ve done some amazing things this year, but they’ve also done some thing that weren’t so amazing.

“But the one thing about this group is they never every quit on me. So I always know there’s a chance something good can happen.

“And wow, was this special here tonight. We’ve had some very exciting games over the years with O’Connell and this was just another one of those. I couldn’t be happier for the girls.”

Knights pull out gritty win

By Andy States
Digital Sports Content Manager

For Saint Mary’s Ryken senior Pat Brennan, the formula for success is quite simple — have fun.

Early in his team’s contest against the visiting Paul VI Panthers it was the Panthers having all the fun. That changed as the game progressed, and with 2 minutes 10 seconds showing on the scoreboard clock Brennan fired the game-winning goal into the net to lift the Knights to a 10-9 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference win.

“The first half I didn’t have much fun,” said Brennan, who scored twice. “Second half we all came out really hard and just had a lot more fun. I’m all about having fun when I play.”

Paul VI (11-5, 6-3) dominated the opening quarter. Off the opening faceoff, the Panthers patiently held the ball for the game’s first couple of minutes before Peter Wiles put one in the net to give the visitors the early lead. Paul VI scored the game’s first three goals and led 4-1 at the end of the quarter.

But Ryken (10-3-1, 7-2) fought back to tie the game at five on Will Fejes’ goal with 1:36 left in the first half. Shortly thereafter, Matthew Boutin slipped one into the goal while being knocked to the ground to give the Knights their first lead just prior to the half.

“I think we had a couple quick goals and everybody just got pumped up and got a little confidence,” Ryken coach John Sothoron said.

Neither team led by more than a goal through the second half. The Panthers scored the first two of the third quarter to jump in front 7-6 on Danny Barcklow’s goal. Ryken followed with the next two, leadfrogging back in front on an Addison Goodley tally.

The Knights broke an 8-8 tie early in the fourth on Fejes’ third goal of the game, but Kevin Righi scored with 3:44 remaining to knot the score at nine. A minute-and-a-half later Brennan ripped in the game-winner to cap Senior Day at Ryken on a happy note.

Fejes led the Knights with three goals, while Boutin, Brennan and Goodley each contributed a pair.

“They were doubling up on Pat, he’s my midfield partner up top,” Fejes said. “When they double-team him it gives me a lane to sweep back right.”

Christian Tiedge paced the Paul VI attack with three tallies. Barcklow and Righi each chipped in with two.

With a roster that has five sophomores and more inexperience that may have been typical in recent years, Ryken has struggled to find consistency at times this season. But with the postseason rapidly approaching, the Knights are still finding ways to win and have not dropped a game since an April 11 affair with South Carroll.

“We didn’t come out with much intensity,” Sothoron said. “We knew Paul VI had a heck of a team this year and they played like it. We came back in spurts, but we held on at the end and that was the most important thing.”

No. 10 –Mindick Says, “No, No” to No-No
S.M.A.C., Maryland
— Although Thomas Stone senior starter Ricky Cusic had faced the
minimum 15 batters through five innings against Patuxent, a one-out
walk and a pair of errors cut his 4-0 lead in half. Cusic still had the
no-hitter in tact, though, until Patuxent senior Joey Mindick stepped
in to launch this offering into right field to give the Panthers a 5-4
lead, despite having just one hit. Play between the teams was suspended
after the eighth inning due to lightning with the score tied, 5-5.

No. 9 –Panthers Break Out
Montgomery County, Maryland
— In an explosive second inning, Paint Branch junior Todd Schultz and
freshman Nick Ponofala each hit their first home runs of the season,
and each was a two-run shot. For Ponofala, he was expected to start the
junior varsity game, but got a day-of-game call-up when Seneca Valley
could not field a JV team. The Panthers beat the Screaming Eagles, 11-5.

No. 8 — Doyle Sets School Record
Northern Region, Virginia
— Six different Mount Vernon players scored in its 18-6 win over
Stuart on Senior Night – and Major junior attack Brendan Doyle fed
almost every one of them. Doyle broke the Mount Vernon single-game
record for assists, with eight.

No. 7 –Mutryn Ties School Record

Montgomery County, Maryland
— Churchill senior – and Landon transfer — Michael Mutryn‘s first
love is hockey. He showed it on this play, slapping a ground ball into
the net for one of his seven goals on the night. Mutryn tied a program
record with the seven goals in the 10-3 over rival Wootton. The Bulldog
record was set in 2002 by Tommy Wentz and tied in 2004 by Alex Middel.

No. 6 –MAXimum Altitude
Northern Region, Virginia —
Hayfield sophomore Elbert Maxwell won the boys’ high jump at the
Golden Eagle Track Classic at Freedom in Woodbridge. Maxwell cleared
his previous personal record of 6-feet, 2-inches by clearing 6-feet,
4-inches here, which qualified him for the Virginia AAA State meet.

No. 5– Hot Corner
Matty Ice
Northern Region, Virginia
With the lead-off runner on first base against Westfield in the bottom
of the fourth inning, Oakton third baseman Matt Chandler abruptly ends
this Bulldog at-bat by diving to catch the fouled-off sacrifice bunt
attempt.

Scoville, Garifo Game-Saving Out
Northern Region, Virginia
— Later that game, the Cougars had runners on the corners with two
outs and trailed the Bulldogs, 2-1, when Oakton pitcher-of-record Adam
Henne
stepped in. He laced the ball down the left-field line, but was
robbed by Westfield sophomore third basemen Aaron Scoville. Scoville
threw across the diamond to Nick Garifo at first, who was forced from
the bag, but still applied the tag for the third out. The Bulldogs won,
2-1, to lock up coach Chuck Welch‘s 300th career win.

No. 4 –Seebeck, Seebeck Run
Northern Region, Virginia
— McLean freshman Josie Seebeck steals the ball from Langley in a
dangerous spot, weaves through four defenders and places the ball
out-of-reach of the Saxon goalkeeper in the eighth minute. The
Highlanders won, 2-0, to earn the MYS Trophy — formerly the Rotary Cup — and improve to 8-1 on the year.

No. 3 –Mitchell Untouchable
S.M.A.C., Maryland
Melanie Mitchell pitched her second perfect game of the season in
McDonough’s 5-0 win over the visiting Leonardtown Raiders on Friday
afternoon. Mitchell recorded 17 of the 21 outs via the strikeout in her
10th shutout in 11 games this season. Second baseman Jasmine Hairston
helped save the perfect game in the top of the fifth, making a diving
stop on a grounder between first and second and throwing — off her
stomach — to first baseman Laura Borawski for the out.

No. 2 –Pull the Crigger
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In
Calvert’s 3-2 win over Stone, Cavalier senior Brandon Crigger struck
out 14 Cougars, while allowing just two hits in complete game.

No. 1 — Big Mac
Northern Region, Virginia
— In the Battle of the Bulldogs, sophomore Jess McNamara hit a
walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift
Westfield over Stone Bridge, 3-2. The Fairfax County version of the
Bulldogs improved to 11-3 on the year a capped an impressive three-win
week. Westfield beat O’Connell, 5-3 on the previous Saturday, and
Concorde District rivals Oakton and Robinson, 8-2 on Wednesday and
16-10 on Thursday, respectively.

Lady Knights remain unblemished in WCAC

By James A. McCray III
DigitalSports, Content Manager

Come into a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference softball game at 11-0 in league play; decent.

Score four runs in the second inning to go up 4-0 en route to your 6-0 victory; valuable.

Take over first place on top of the WCAC softball standings and improve to 12-0; priceless.

The Bishop O’Connell Lady Knights softball team did just that on Friday afternoon with its victory over the hosting St. Mary Ryken Lady Knights.

Led by a complete-game, four-hit performance from starting pitcher Jilly Falle, the O’Connell Knights earned sole possession of first place.

“We just came off of a loss against a public-school team, Westfield,” Falle explained, “so coming here, I think it improved my focus.”

Falle struck out nine batters in her winning effort, and also helped herself from the plate with a RBI single in the top half of the second inning in which O’Connell scored four runs.

Allison Grasmeder got the scoring going with a RBI double putting O’Connell up 1-0. After Falle’s RBI, Jessica Burk plated a run on the second RBI double of the frame, and an error allowed the fourth run of the inning to score.

With four quick runs to start the game, O’Connell head coach Tommy Orndorff was happy with the fast start.

“I was pleased,” Orndorff said. “These are the two top teams in the WCAC, or that’s what it looks like right now. … For us to show up and play with the intensity that we did, I was very pleased all the way around.”

O’Connell (14-1 overall) scored two more runs in the top half of the fifth inning thanks to the bat of Maria Jose-Zavala on a two-run, inside-the-park home run to give the Knights the 6-0 lead.

“Yay,” Jose-Zavala said of her home run. “I was just trying to work on what the coach’s are telling me. They know everything that they are talking about. … I just tried to focus on keeping my elbow up and keeping everything compact.

” … It felt good to hit a home run, especially against Ryken because they have a really good pitcher. She is probably one of the best pitchers we have seen out here.”

Ryken (12-4, 7-2 WCAC) was led in the circle by starting pitcher Katie Delapaz.

Delapaz struck out two batters in her efforts as Ryken head coach Scott Kuhns was pleased with her and the team’s efforts in the contest.

“Great game, great effort,” Kuhns said. “… It was just one bad inning. I don’t know what happened; it just seemed that the balls fell in the holes [for O’Connell].”

On his pitcher’s efforts, Kuhns added: “She was tough. She is going to battle back every time, and she is never going to back down.”
