Drew Smith, Bishop Ireton’s record-breaking wide receiver, was selected by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame as the National Capital Region’s top scholar-athlete for 2015.  Smith, along with teammates Josh Ammon and Nigel Bullard, was among 25 nominees feted at a dinner at the Army-Navy Country Club on April 19, 2015.  The National Capital Region Chapter includes more than 125 schools in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland.  Smith, one of five student-athletes awarded a $1,000 scholarship, was recognized as the Student-Athlete of the Year and the Chapter’s nominee for the Foundation’s Eastern Region Award.  He becomes the the second Cardinal, first since Andrew Rodriguez in 2008, to be the Chapter’s Eastern Region nominee.  Bishop Ireton is one of only three schools to have student-athletes feted in each of the Chapter’s first nine years.

Drew, who arrived at Bishop Ireton without the benefit of any “organized” football experience, has been a model of excellence and consistency on the field, in the classroom and in the community.  The Foundation scholar-athlete program considers football achievements (40%), academic excellence (40%) and citizenship (20%) in evaluating nominees.  Drew led the Cardinals to the 2014 Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Championship Game, catching a school-record 57 passes for more than 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns.  He was selected first team all-state and ranked in the top 7 in all wide receiver categories in the Washington Post.  Drew served as a member of the football team’s Leadership Council, was honored as team Most Valuable Player and was a team captain as well.  Drew has maintained a “straight A” academic average throughout his four years at Bishop Ireton, earning the prestigious Marguerite Scafati Academic Award and a host of other academic honors.  He has served as a Kairos leader, serves as an usher at his parish and has served volunteer hours at a senior center and at Christ House in Alexandria.  Drew recently committed to attending Villanova University and playing football for the Wildcats.  He plans to major in Business and Finance.

Josh Ammon and Nigel Bullard, stalwarts on the Cardinal defense in 2013 and 2014, were also honored by the Foundation.  Josh was a two-time All VISAA linebacker, earning first team honors in 2014.  He led the team in tackles for his two years in Alexandria, maintained a grade point average above 3.0 and will attend Hobart – William Smith College next year.  Josh is the Statesmen’s top linebacker recruit.  Nigel Bullard has been an exceptional teammate, defensive end and student since he arrived at Bishop Ireton two years ago.  His 19 tackles against Benedictine in the VISAA championship game were a team high in 2014 and he was honored as a second-team all-state defensive lineman.  Nigel has maintained a grade point average above 3.9 and, like Drew Smith, is a member of the National Honor Society.  Nigel recently decided to attend Penn State University where he plan to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Drew, Josh and Nigel are among fifteen Bishop Ireton football players who have been honored by the National Football Foundation as student-athletes during Coach Tony Verducci’s leadership of the program.

Febles Joins Bishop Ireton as Track & Field Head Coach

New varsity track and field coach, Mr. Matt Febles, joins the Cardinals after stints with Xavier High School and Fordham Prep in the NYC Catholic League.

Mathew Febles of Bethseda, Maryland, was introduced to the Bishop Ireton track program Tuesday as their new varsity head coach by athletic director Bill Simmons.

Febles recently moved to the Washington, DC area with his wife after a number of years in New York city, where he coached track and field at Fordham Prep and most recently at Xavier High School.  While at Xavier he assisted with jumping, high jump, long jump, and triple jump as well as working with distance runners.  At Fordham Prep he also served as an assistant coach responsible strength and conditioning as well as coaching sprinters and hurdlers. His athletes achieved school records, regional and state successes and a number of athletes gone on to compete at the collegiate level.

Febles will begin immediately to organize the indoor track club effort for the December through February time frame, then roll straight into the spring track and field schedule.  Spring sports begin February 20th.

Cardinals honored by Alexandria Sportsman’s Club

The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club honored six Bishop Ireton athletes and a coach at their 58th annual awards gala at the Westin Hotel in Alexandria Wednesday night.  President Jeff Murphy welcomed athletes and their families from the four city high schools, Bishop Ireton, Episcopal, St Stephens/St Agnes School and TC Williams and introduced Channel 7’s sports reporter Britt McHenry as the evening’s guest of honor.

The club recognized 25 athletes from the four schools as well as a City Rec League athlete.   They also lauded Ireton’s Neil Berkman, men’s basketball coach, as their coach-of-the-year for his 18-14 season, the most wins by an Ireton basketball team since 1986.  Berkman’s squad pulled off the upset of the metro area high school in the WCAC’s quarterfinal round when the 8th seeded Cardinals upset the Conference’s undefeated, top-seeded Gonzaga by nine.

The Cardinals also pulled a coup’ of sorts by snaring both the men’s and women’s rower of the year awards. Seniors Joey Gorman, headed to George Washington University, and Princeton-bound Catherine Babiec, were tapped by the Club for recognition.  The teams had their strongest season ever, the girls ranked 5th in the varsity 8+ boat while the boys earned a 12th place ranking in the US Rowing national championships.

Senior Mark Porter, Ireton’s rock solid number one player was named the City’s golfer of the year. Porter led the Cardinals to a winning season, capped by dual meet wins over DeMatha and Landon. The IAC defending champs suffered their first setback in 2 years at the hands of the Cardinals and the win over the Stags propelled the Cards into the championship flight of the WCAC tournament.

Emily Quinn capped her four-year swimming career on Cambridge Road with the women’s swimmer of the year award. The versatile Quinn, who also played softball, swam every stroke and nearly every distance for the Cardinal swim and dive team, keying the girls team to a NOVA Catholic team championship, as well as a 17-1 dual meet record and 4 years as the City team champions.

Adrienne Maday, a junior, won the women’s soccer player of the year award.  The midfielder with a cannon shot and the ability to find the open man paced the Cardinals to another top echelon finish in the WCAC and a stay in the Washington Post’s top 10 listing of women’s high school programs.

Freshman Stephanie Lin captured the women’s tennis award for her play at number 4 singles and number 2 doubles. Lin had the most wins for the Cardinals this season and advanced to the WCAC championship match in number 4 singles before falling.

The Club selected Mike Sloper, father of the Cardinals’ tennis coach, Katie Sloper-Johnson as their Sportsman of the Year for his tireless devotion to the Club and willingness to take on any task, large or small, to get the job done.

In her remarks to the crowd, Ms McHenry related how her journey as a collegiate soccer player from rural Florida opened doors for her in journalism and, once the door was opened, her ability to take advantage of the opportunity, just like a good soccer player would, has propelled her to a rewarding career in Washington in sports journalism. She encouraged the athletes in attendance to use those lessons and successes in sports to move them ahead in life.
