Cardinals varsity 8 boat edges DeMatha in first race of the season

Under gray threatening skies, Bishop Ireton, DeMatha, and Elizabeth Seton High Schools rowed their season’s first races on the Anacostia River on Saturday, the 24th of March.  The rowers’ from each school demonstrated an intensity that was evident beginning the first race of the day.

Down ¾ of a length entering the last 500m of the race, the Bishop Ireton men’s varsity 8 slowly crept back into contention and squeezed out a one-second victory over DeMatha at the finish line. “I am glad for the varsity men as they avenged last year with an emotional victory over DeMatha.” said head coach Eric Gehrke.

The men’s Novice 4 and the women’s Varsity 8, JV 8, and Novice 8 all had opening season successes well. “I am happy with our athletes’  competitiveness and intensity – it should continue to serve us well as their rowing and awareness catches up throughout the season.” said Coach Gehrke.

Army’s Andrew Rodriguez, Bishop Ireton class of 2008, receives the Sullivan Award recognizing the nation’s top amatuer athlete at a ceremony at the New York Athletic Club Tuesday in New York City.

2008 Bishop Ireton graduate Andrew Rodriguez was awarded the 2011 James E. Sullivan Award by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) at the prestigious New York Athletic Club on March 20, 2012.  This award honors the nation’s outstanding amateur athletes. Presented annually since 1930, the Sullivan award is based on character, leadership and sportsmanship. Notable recipients of the AAU Sullivan Award include: Mark Spitz, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Joyner, Peyton Manning, Michael Phelps, J.J. Redick, Tim Tebow, and Shawn Johnson.

Bishop Ireton Principal Tim Hamer stated that, “We congratulate Andrew on this tremendous accomplishment and are all so proud of how well he continues to exemplify what we hope all Bishop Ireton High School graduates will bring to their endeavors.”

While at Bishop Ireton, Andrew was captain of the football teams in 2006 and 2007, three-time first team All Virginia Independent School Linebacker, National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, and the Alexandria Sportsman Club football player of the year.

Coach Tony Verducci, said, “His coaches, teachers, and teammates can attest to the fact he is an even better teammate and person than an award can capture.” A native of Alexandria, Va., he is the son of Commanding General of the U.S. Army Forces Command David Rodriguez. His sister, Amy, graduated from West Point in 2006 and recently completed a tour of duty in Iraq.

Upon receiving the AAU award, Rodriguez said, “It is an incredible honor to win this award – and a tribute to everyone I’ve had with me in my life, from my family to my coaches to my teammates.”  He went on to pay tribute to the servicemen and women around the world adding, “They are who we play for and this award goes out to them.”  Following graduation this spring, Rodriguez begins infantry training in Georgia before reporting to his first duty station in Vicenza, Italy.

Rodriguez was selected for his athleticism and sportsmanship in collegiate football at West Point, as well as for his achievements off the field.  He is an Army football team tri-captain.  As a sophomore in 2009, he was selected as the Army-Navy football game MVP.  He missed the entire 2010 season due to two back surgeries.  While recovering, he served as the BI JV Assistant Lacrosse Coach.  He returned to Army as a team captain in 2011 and appeared in all 11 contests.

In addition to athletic achievements, Rodriguez excels in the classroom. Carrying a 4.14 GPA as a mechanical engineering major, Rodriguez ranks third in a class of 1,052 cadets. Rodriguez is Army’s first Campbell Trophy winner and the school’s 14th National Football Foundation’s National Scholar-Athlete.

BI Athletic Director Bill Simmons said, “Andrew Rodriguez is just a very special young man. At Bishop Ireton he was an exceptional student and football player, but more than that, he is just a wonderful person. He is the type of young man every parent hopes their son will grow up to be, he is the guy every parent hopes will marry their daughter.  Today, I am very proud
of Andrew Rodriguez, but I always have been proud of Andrew Rodriguez.”

Great preseason has Cardinals excited for softball home opener Tuesday

Debbie Ward will play a big part in Bishop Ireton's season according Coach Terri Pearson

After playing three scrimmages in three days, the Bishop Ireton softball team is ready to open the season Tuesday afternoon at Luckett field against the Cadets of Saint Johns.  The scrimmages against West Potomac, Wakefield and Flint Hill provided the game like conditions which fine tuned the team for the start of the season.

Wednesday night against a talented West Potomac squad Senior Micki Crouch split the pitching time with Sophomore Susie Rhodes.  They were matched up with battery mates Debbie Ward and Heather Pearson.  Katie Kiesner displayed her versatility playing both first and second base.  At the end of the regulation 7 innings the Cardinals had done very well for themselves.

Thursday’s scrimmage with Wakefield gave Coach Pearson the chance to a good look all her players in a game stituation.  Crouch again started at pitcher, walking two and hitting two batsman before settling down for a smooth second inning.  Susie Rhodes finished the game striking out 9, while Crouch moved to short stop and went 2 for 4 at the plate.  It was another strong outing for the Cardinals in their preseason preparation.

The wind and cold on Friday afternoon at Flint Hill did not cool off the cardinal bats.  Debbie Ward, went 4 for 5 including a home run while driving in 4. Susie Rhodes went 3 for 5 and hit a home run of her own while pitching the whole game. The outfield of Kathleen Walsh, Maria Manzek, Katie Milam and Chrissy Snyder played tremendous defense handling wind blown balls throughout the cold afternoon.  Once again, Ireton had a dominating preseason performance.

“The scrimmages gave our captains the opportunity to set the expectations for our new players while all the girls had the chance to play at game speed and see a wide variety of pitchers,” commented head coach Terri Pearson.  “We were able to get better looks at the players and move them around the diamond to see what combinations of players and positions work best.  We’ll take a well deserved rest over the weekend and be ready to start the regular season.”

The Cardinals open the season at home Tuesday at 4 pm against the Cadets of St Johns, then host perennial WCAC power Bishop O’Connell on Thursday.
Friday afternoon they travel to Richmond for a Saturday double header against St. Catherine’s and St. Anthony’s of Long Island, New York.
