Cardinals Stun Top Ranked Good Counsel, 3-0

Bishop Ireton (5-3, 5-2) scored it’s biggest win in recent memory with a surprising 3-0 upset of previously unbeaten Good Counsel (8-1-1, 5-1-1) at Fannon Field Friday.  Katrina Guillou gave Ireton an early 1-0 lead in the first half, then the all conference forward  scored Ireton’s third goal around Karina Azar goal in  a first half avalanche of goals as the Cardinals soared to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Falcons played a tougher second half, but Joanna Faletti was not seriously tested as the senior goalkeeper turned away all 8 shots on goal and quarterbacked the defense, lead by juniors Hannah Thomas and Helena Barber, to stifled the high flying Falcons.

Ireton put 9 shots on net for the game and controlled the play for much of the contest with crisp passing and ball control. “We played to our potential today.” explained Coach Marianna Sullivan. “We have great respect for Good Counsel, but we knew what we needed to do to be successful and the girls went out and did it. We talked about what to expect in the second half and the team played with confidence the entire game.”

The Cardinals return to action next Tuesday when they head to Kensington, Maryland for a JV/varsity doubleheader with the Academy of the Holy Cross. Gametime is 4pm for varsity match and JV follows.

Senior Joanna Faletti's shutout led the Cardinals to upset of top ranked Good Counsel, 3-0 in Alexandria.
