Boys’ Soccer keeps rolling, 4-1 at Potomac

Junior Joey Faddoul, (10) scored 2 of Ireton's four goals in a 4-1 win over The Potomac School in McLean Friday. The win pushed Ireton to 4-1 on the season with Archbishop Carroll opening WCAC at Witter Drive Field #2 on Tuesday.

Coach Jon Norem’s lads continued their strong start to the 2014 campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over The Potomac School in McLean Friday in boys’ soccer.  The win boosted the Cardinals to 4-1 on the year, primed for their WCAC opener Tuesday when Archbishop Carroll visits Bishop Ireton.

While Bishop Ireton goalie Matt Poling was making exceptional saves early to keep the visitors locked in a scoreless battle, Matt Breiner got the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the first half when he deflected a shot off a defender to grab a 1-0 lead late in the period.

Joey Faddoul took charge in the second half, Ireton springing the junior loose for a a pair of one-on-one plays and the junior beat the keeper both times, chipping the Panther net minder for his second goal, to swell the Cardinals’ advantage to 3-0.

George Mereu was in the right spot and cleaned up a rebound late in the second half and the margin ballooned to 4-0 before Potomac School got a marker on the board for the 4-1 final.

The week ahead is a busy one for the redbirds, after a date on Tuesday with the Lions to open league play at 4pm, Bishop Ireton (4-1) will call on the defending Division I state champions, St Stephens/St Agnes on Wednesday.  That IAC/WCAC matchup is slated for a 4:15 start.
