National regattas cap Cardinal rowing season

615May 15, 16 saw the Bishop Ireton rowers hit the road for the first of two national level regattas held in Philadelphia area.  First, the team competed in the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia (the world’s largest high school regatta) where the Men’s Varsity 4 finished in 15th place (out of 60 boats) overall. The Women’s Varsity 4 finished in 16th place overall in a field of 57 boats. The Cardinals’  women’s double as well as the women’s novice quad rowed hard, but did not advance to the semi-finals.

Bishop Ireton rowed in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, May 22, 23  at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Regatta where both the men’s and women’s Varsity 4 boats competed hard. They both were behind in their opening heats in fifth place and then finished strong in the last five hundred meters to come in third.

This sent them to the repechage round instead of going straight to semi-finals. In their repechage heat for the women, they ended up in a very tight race pulling very hard at the end to finish first. The men’s boat also was in a tight race and ended second in a close finish. The two boats then advanced to semi-finals where they fell short and did not advance to finals. The women’s boat finished 18th overall and the men’s boat finished 17th overall. Bishop Ireton made a good, strong showing after a season filled with adversity.

We are very proud of our entire team and look forward to a strong group of men and women returning to BI Crew next year!623

The Cardinals (7-0, 2-0) return to WCAC action on Tuesday when the always tough Tartans of Holy Cross visit Fannon Field at 4pm.  Holy Cross was edged by a goal late at St Stephens earlier in the season and suffered their first setback in WCAC when they fell 15-5 to powerhouse Good Counsel last week.

Cardinals rally falls just short, 29-26

Sophomore Perris Jones (2) scores for the Cardinals.

Homecoming 2014 promised an exciting game with top-ranked Benedictine visiting second ranked Bishop Ireton and the squads didn’t let anyone down in a thrilling 29-26 contest where the visitors escaped a 26-point second half by the Cardinals for the win. It was a game with everything a fan could want; big plays, exciting comebacks, unexpected turns, it was an entertaining, if disappointing, afternoon for Cardinal football fans.

The Cadets took advantage of a fumbled punt after the Cardinals had pinned them deep in their own territory to cobble together the game’s first scoring drive.  Senior Ramon Jones scored the first of three touchdowns with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter to give Benedictine a 6-0 lead.  Cameron Cougill’s PAT was wide left as Ireton got the ball for the first time.

Both ball clubs moved the ball throughout a quick first half, but neither could muster and offensive scoring drive.  The Cadets’ special teams got in the act however, when Andrew Latrash stood near the back line of the end zone on 4th and 17 to punt the ball away.

Senior Mikey McDonald charged up the middle and got a hand on the kick, knocking the ball out of the end zone for a safety with 5:00 remaining in the half.  Chandler Wilder made a spectacular interception, one of three on the day by Ireton, to blunt Benedictine’s final drive of the half and send the teams to the locker with an 8-0 score on the board.  Little did fans know, but the fireworks were about to begin as clubs returned for the second half.

Bishop Ireton came out of the locker room and promptly drove 80 yards for their first touchdown, aided by a 50-yard aerial from Joe Dickinson to Brenden Peifer. The strike set the Cardinals up on the Cadet 10 yard line and three plays later sophomore Perris Jones scampered in for a touchdown, David Cooper trimming the Benedictine advantage to 8-7 with his PAT at 8:30 left in the third quarter.

The visitors responded on the next series, mixing the running of Ramon Jones and strong throws by Jake Waldrop. Jones capped the drive with a 14-yard bolt up the middle and with 6:10 left the Cadets were back to an eight point margin at 15-7.

Ireton’s next drive rode a pair of tosses to Sam Smith and another over the shoulder grab by Peifer at the one yard line . Andrew Latrash bulled in from there and a fake kick resulted in a 2-point PAT and a stalemate at 15-15 with 2:36 in the third.

Benedictine scored on their next two possessions to grab a 29-15 advantage, including an 85-yard sprint by the Cadet’s Jones, who plagued the Cardinals throughout the contest, as the game entered the final quarter.

In the fourth, down 29-15 the Cardinals started their comeback.  Corey Johnson thwarted one Cadet drive with a diving interception of a tipped pass, later linebacker Josh Ammon picked off a pass 8 yards deep in the end zone and returned it the Cardinals’ 44.  The home team would settle for a 31-yard field goal as a result of that turnover to pull to 29-18.

After Bishop Ireton converted a successful onside kick, quarterback Joe Dickinson led the Cardinals down the field and found sophomore Sam Smith on a fade to the end zone where he out jumped the defender and hauled in a 20-yard pass for a touchdown with 2:17 left in the game. Once again, the Cardinals successfully completed a two-point try, this time a scrambling Dickinson tossing back over the middle to a diving Peifer and suddenly Ireton trailed by only three.

Coach Tony Verducci had buried his three timeouts deep in his pocket and now was the time to use them. Benedictine, stung by back-to-back interceptions, tried to pound the ball on the ground, but this series, Jones had little running room and Bishop Ireton got the ball back for one more series with 76 seconds remaining in the contest and the 84 yards from the end zone.  It was not to be on this Saturday, however, and when Dickinson was sacked on third down, the ball was loose with :45 remaining. The Cadets took a knee and had survived the Cardinals’ furious comeback.

The loss dropped Bishop Ireton to 5-2 on the season, still good enough to retain the number 2 spot in this week’s poll, while top-ranked Benedictine improved to 6-1.  The Cardinals head to Fairfax Friday night to visit the Paul VI Panthers for a 7pm contest. The Cadets stay in their road whites and venture out to Woodberry Forest for key matchup  for the Richmond Catholic School. After the Panthers, Ireton returns home one final time to host The Potomac School on senior day before ending the regular season on the road at St. John Paul the Great.

George Mereu was in the right spot and cleaned up a rebound late in the second half and the margin ballooned to 4-0 before Potomac School got a marker on the board for the 4-1 final.

Cardinals Surprise DeMatha, 6-4 in Baseball

Coaches and players expressed confidence in the Cardinals' chances in the upcoming playoffs as the final regular season games wind up this week.

DeMatha wasn’t able to overcome the big hole it dug itself against the Bishop Ireton Cardinals falling  6-4 Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park in Maryland.

“The guys played a solid game, starting with Robert Corallo’s effort on the mound.  When you can beat DeMatha, PVI, lose to St John’s on a play at the plate, it suggests to me that we can make an impact in this upcoming tournament. We just have to focus and play well.” commented first-year coach Rex Thomas on the Cardinals’ win.

The  Cardinals tore into the Stags to take a  six-run lead by the fifth inning.   DeMatha scored on a walk by Justin Morris in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Justin Morris, an RBI single by Chris Jeletic, and a hit by pitch in the seventh inning. Despite its efforts, DeMatha couldn’t finish the comeback against Corallo and Sean Workman who got the game’s final out.

Ireton’s Matthew Bardak racked up three RBI on one hit when he homered in the first inning.    Robert Corallo got the win.   He allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings. Corallo struck out nine, walked five and gave up seven hits.

Cameron Fitzgerald ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision for the Stags, charged with the loss. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed five runs.

Bishop Ireton Cardinals Varsity didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the first inning when they scored on the  two-run Bardak homer.   The visiting Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the fourth.  Ryan Scott’s double got things going, plating Bardak  and Chandler Wilder. That was followed up by Eric Alvarez’s single, scoring James Swiger.  The win improves Bishop Ireton to 4-10 in WCAC play with Good Counsel visiting on senior day Monday.  The season ends with the Cardinals visiting St Mary’s Ryken on Wednesday.

Cardinals come up just short, 56-52

Lions break open a tight game to top Cardinals in Alexandria

Junior Cece Leone (31) is fouled by the Lions' Courtney Crawford (34) in action Friday night in Godley Gym.

Archbishop Carroll and Bishop Ireton came out fast in the girls varsity contest in Alexandria Friday, but it was the Cardinals that cooled off while the Lions roared by them for a 69-36 win Friday.

Both clubs scored early and often as the visiting Carroll edged out to an 18-13 advantage in a high-scoring opening stanza.  While the Lions kept up the torrid scoring pace, they also turned up the defensive pressure with devastating effect. The 15-3 margin in the second period seemingly doomed the home team to a setback as they headed to the locker room down 33-16.

Ireton rebounded in the third quarter, outscoring the green and gold clad opponents 15-13 but still trailed 46-31 heading into the final period. Once again, Coach Edith White’s Lions stepped it up on offense and piled 23 4th quarter points on the Cardinals to win the game going away.

Junior Cece Leone again led Ireton with 14 points while Alex Stipano contributed six and Charlotte Sofield added 4.   Archbishop Carroll was led by three players in double figures, including Courtney Crawford with 12, Jenna Patterson with 11, and Kenyatta Butler with 10.

Next up for the Cardinals is Middleburg Academy at 1pm on Saturday in Godley Gym.  The 7-7 Dragons had a tight game last year in Middleburg with the visiting Cardinals who end their current home stand Saturday, returning to WCAC play at Bishop McNamara on Tuesday.
