Cardinals smother Episcopal, 33-7

Cardinals' defense has yielded only 1 touchdown in last 2 games.

With little more than 4 minutes remaining in the contest, the Cardinal Crazies took up the chants, “undefeated” and “Coach Ver-du-chee” as Bishop Ireton wrapped up its second strong performance against a city rival with a 33-7 win over the Maroon of Episcopal. The “Migration” Saturday felt like the home game the Ireton skipper was looking for earlier in the week as Cardinal fans filled the east side of the beautiful Hummel Bowl on the campus of Episcopal.  Three quarters of the crowd appeared to be Ireton supporters, including another strong showing on the road by the Cardinal Crazies.

The undefeated Cardinals played a dominating defensive game, limiting Episcopal to only 75 yards of total offense for the day.   Early on, that defense was key as the Cardinals struggled early to find its offensive rhymn, but Coach Matt Shea’s lads, led by junior Jack Beer and senior Andrew Lutterloh on the line, backers Ned Curry and Hudson Sullivan, and Kevin Moreno, with his first interception, gave Episcopal no breathing room and few yards.  All this against an offensive line group that Ireton coaches suggested may have been the best the Cardinals have faced so far.

Ireton kicked off to open the contest and the defense quickly set the tone for the game, forcing a 3 and out series for the Maroon.  The visitors started at their own 39 and put together a 9-play drive that eventually stalled at the EHS 35, where Aurelian Guillaud punted to put the hosts on their 17.  The teams would trade defensive stands, although the Maroon went out without gaining a first down on their 4 possessions of the game.

As the scoreless first period  moved into the second, the error-proned home team would commit 7 first half penalties and two turnovers, Ireton converted a turnover that would lead to the first score of the contest.  In a dominating defensive series, the Maroon struggled to get out of their own end when Kevin Moreno picked off a Coker pass only to fumble the pigskin back to the quarterback on the return.  With a new set of downs, the Maroon’s Johnny Bond fumbled on their second play of that series and Moses Webb recovered on the Episcopal 10 yard line.

It took the Cardinals one play for Webb to take the fumble to the end zone and stake Ireton to a 7-0 lead.  After a Nick Galdos PAT, he’s perfect in that category this season, Episcopal had their brightest moment of the afternoon when DuButts returned the Galdos kick off 90 yards to paydirt and tie the game moments after the Cardinals had seized the lead.  As much as it may have electrified the home sideline, it also may have had the same effect on Bishop Ireton.

The Maroon held Ireton on the next series but again put themselves in trouble when a bad snap forced Bond to scramble on 4th down and eventually was penalized for intentionally grounding the ball, causing not only loss of yardage, but loss of down.  Ireton took over on the Maroon 9-yard line.  Although the Cardinal ground attack faltered in the “red zone”, Nick Galdos kicked his first field goal of the season from 21-yard line for a 10-7 advantage.

Justin Paige picked off another Coker aerial at the Ireton 31 and, after a two-yard loss, Brandon Price-Williams, who rushed for over 200 on the day, broke a 71-yard dash into the end zone to increase the lead to 17-7.  Episcopal tried to counterattack but when they were forced to punt with 27 seconds left, Verducci’s squad saw an opportunity.

The Cards started on their own 46 and Zingler found Price-Williams down the sideline for 17 yards before the heady junior stepped out of bounds to stop the clock.  In what may have been the play of the game, Zingler executed the screen pass perfectly to senior Moses Webb. With Ireton’s linemen and receivers blocking down field, Webb alternately sprinted, dodged, and stuttered his way into the endzone on the final play of the half to put Ireton up 23-7.  The Cardinals tried to catch Episcopal off balance with a fake kick, two-point conversion, but the Ireton pass was incomplete.

Price-Williams lost the ball on Ireton’s first possession of the second half deep in Cardinal territory, but the defense owned this day and forced a 32-yard Maroon field goal attempt that sailed wide to the left. Ireton took the ball on their 20 and, with Zingler pitching to Malcolm Westbrook, Moses Webb, and Matt McShea and handing off to Price-Williams and Webb, soon found themselves deep in Maroon territory again on the Episcopal 5 yard line before the drive stalled. Galdos converted his second field goal, again a 21-yarder, to push the lead to 26-7.

It was again three and out for the home team and Ireton would again drive into the home end of the field as the third quarter moved into the final period. Galdos would miss on this attempt from 32 yards as his boot was just wide left.

Cardinal reserve players got their turn in the game in the 4th and Kelly, Spollen, Moseley kept the pressure on the Maroon offense. Forcing yet another punt, Ireton mustered one final drive in behind the running of Price-Williams. As the offense emptied the bench, Sullivan moved from linebacker to quarterback.  Riding his running, the sophomore scored Ireton’s final touchdown on a one-yard sneak to put Ireton up 33-7.  When EHS turned the ball over on downs, the Cards took a knee to close the contest and push the VISFA’s top ranked team to a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Next up for the Cardinals is their third of four home games this season when the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great visit Fannon Field for the first time in the young diocesan school’s history.  The Dumfries school stunned the Cardinals 27-23 last fall in the first ever meeting of the football teams.

Odds & Ends:

– Kickoff is moved to 3pm to accomodate students taking the ACT college exams Saturday morning.

– Ireton debuted an all-white road uniform, trading in the gold pants with cardinal and white stripes for the solid white breeches with white jersey on cardinal & gold numerals.

– The win was the largest margin of victory for Ireton of the 7 wins in the series, Maroon has 11 wins on their ledger.

-Cardinals are 4-0 for first time since 1998 season.

Cardinals win WCAC opener in Girls Soccer, 5-2

The nonconference portion of a team’s schedule is designed to harden the squad for the rigors of WCAC conference play. Rival Paul VI Catholic visited Fannon Field looking to see if the Cardinals girls soccer team was ready to contend for the upper echelon of the elite conference.  “We didn’t play our best soccer today,” commented Bishop Ireton’s first year coach, Gino Leon, “but we did get a win against a good team”.

The Cardinals drew first blood when a great lead pass to senior all conference forward Katrina Guillou led to Ireton’s first goal with 34:06 remaining in the first half.  Shortly thereafter, Ciana Puglise scored Ireton’s second goal in the 12th minute of play to expand the lead to 2-0.

PVI countered almost immediately as the Cardinals momentarily looked somewhat flat-footed and disorganized in their defensive end and junior Cali Hutson found the back of the net to trim the lead to 2-1.  Just over 5 minutes later however, the Cardinals regained the two goal margin when sophomore Meaghan Reilly tallied her first goal in WCAC action.

The second half saw Panther senior Danielle Guenbaum get by the Cardinals goalkeeper for an easy lay up to close the margin to 3-2 with about 15 minutes gone. Guillou took another perfectly led pass to beat the PVI defense to put Ireton up 4-2 with 16 minutes remaining and her perfect corner kick resulted Karina Azar’s header with seconds left in the contest to close the game 5-2.

The JV teams struggled to a 0-0 tie in the nightcap and will have the week off as the varsity roadtrip on Friday is a one team affair.  The Cardinals travel to St James for a varsity only contest, start time is 5:30pm at St James.

Cardinals’ girls tennis upend defending WCAC champs, 5-4

Senior Mary Rose White has been a 4-year contributor to varsity tennis.

An old sports saying is that “you don’t have to always be ahead if you have the heart to come from behind”.  Katie Sloper’s Cardinals lived the message Friday when they dumped PVI, the WCAC’s reining girls tennis champs, 5-4 in Fairfax.

The match was postponed 24 hours due to rain but when the Cardinals arrived at Fairfax High School, they were ready to play.  Falling behind 2-4 after the first 6 individual matches, the girls regrouped to sweep the three doubles matches and win the day, 5-4.

Seniors Mary Rose White and  Christy Macey played #1 doubles, winning 8-3. Their match was the deciding match and first match for freshman Kirsten Ann Parker and junior Cristina Spinetto, who took the #3 doubles, 8-6.

“We have put in a lot of time and effort into our doubles with strategies and improving our confidence up at the net. This was very beneficial when it came down to taking all doubles. The girls have great patience and focus when it came down to pressured situations.” praised head coach Katie Sloper, whose squads have engineered some memorable wins.

Last season Sloper’s girls ended a 5-year WCAC dual match winning streak when they topped St Johns College High School 5-4. The win over the defending champions opened the WCAC season for the Cardinals.

Wolves upend Cardinals in boys soccer, 2-1

Cardinals battle Don Bosco, Cristo Rey on Fannon Field in the home opener for Bishop Ireton.

Senior Nestor Arias staked Don Bosco, Cristo Rey to a 1-0 first half lead, then junior Emanuel Omogbo split two Ireton defenders with 39;17 left and the Wolves held on to win 2-1 in the home opener for Bishop Ireton’s boys soccer team.

“I think I wanted more.” said the tall, slender Omogbo of his gamewinning tally. “It is my first year playing high school soccer, I am a basketball player.”
The Cardinals moved the ball effectively and had shots on goal, but couldn’t find the net until senior Nick Galdos was awarded a penalty kick with 22 minutes remaining in the contest. The four-year varsity player made no doubt in burying the shot and Ireton continued to press the visitors hard in their end.
Elliot Fantino dribbled and passed the Cardinals into a number of opportunities but the Don Bosco squad denied the goals with strong goal keeping and consistently clearing the Ireton corner kick opportunities.
Ireton (0-1-1) heads to Fairfax on Monday to open the WCAC campaign at PVI.  Gametime for the varsity contest is 6:45pm, JV will kickoff at 5:30pm on Panther Field.

Ty Gardner joins Cardinal sports medicine team

Ty Gardner joins Cardinals' sports medicine department for 2011-12 school year.

Mr. Ty Gardner, a recent graduate of the George Mason athletic training program, has joined the Bishop Ireton sports medicine staff as an assistant to head certified athletic trainer, Mr. Matt Horton.

Ireton athletic director Bill Simmons was effusive in his enthusiasm for Gardner joining the staff. “We now have more than 40 teams and nearly 600 athletes in the program. Mr. Horton is often overwhelmed during the day with trying to prepare athletes for games while at the same time trying to conduct the physical therapy necessary to aid in the recovery of injured athletes. Ty will really improve our capabilities, including coverage of practices.”
The George Mason grad began his duties on September 8th and supervised his first Cardinal event on Saturday when the field hockey team hosted Bishop O’Connell on Fannon Field.  He got an early baptism to the rigors of the job when a JV football player broke his femur earlier in the day at practice.
“I look forward to a very exciting year for Bishop Ireton athletics.  I will do everything in my power to ensure that is a safe and successful year.” promised the Gainesville, Florida, native.

Cardinals Overcome Mistakes, O’Connell 14-7

Both the Bishop Ireton Cardinals and Bishop O’Connell Knights had a slew of miscues throughout the afternoon. But, despite the errors, Ireton found themselves up by a touchdown with two seconds to play and the Knights found themselves with a golden opportunity as twilight began to turn to dusk.

With one last play and the ball resting on the Ireton 27-yard line, the Knights had a chance to score a potential game-tying touchdown. O’Connell senior quarterback Thomas Terwilliger readied for the final snap of the game as the racous, standing room only crowd at Bishop Ireton’s Fannon field grew louder. Terwillinger corralled the snap and looked down the field to launch the ball, but before he could set up, Ireton’s pressure forced him to step up. Moments later he was sacked by Cardinals’ senior defensive lineman Andrew Lutterloh with no time remaining on the clock. The Cardinals hung on to win 14-7 as the Cardinal Crazies rushed the field.

“It means a lot for our seniors who haven’t beat them,” Ireton’s junior quarterback PJ Zingler said. “It means a great deal for this Ireton team. It’s great to start off 1-0. We had a huge crowd here today. It shows that we are ready to face a lot of people no matter who they are.”

While there is a lot of bad blood in this rivalry, there was a great sense of community and respect because before the game. Both teams honored Steve Trimble with a moment of silence before the game and the Knights wrote a black stripe down the middle of their helmets in his honor

“It was a very emotional game,” O’Connell head coach Tony Green said. “Our kids were very nervous- we had some issues going through the emotions.”

“The effort on both sides was reflective of what [Trimble] would have expected from both schools,” Ireton head coach Tony Verducci added. “O’Connell played very hard and well. “

The Cardinals scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter. Zingler threw a 43-yard strike to Moses Webb to put the Cardinals in scoring position. Then junior running back Brandon Williams-Price scored on a seven yard sweep to give the Cardinals a 7-0 advantage.

Midway through the second quarter the Knights would answer. O’Connell gambled on a fourth down from their own 38-yard line. They lined up in their punt formation but their punter, Terwillinger, is also their quarterback. The trickery worked as he completed an 11-yard pass to sophomore running back Marquis Rowe for the first down. Later in the drive, Rowe would put the ball in the endzone on a 28-yard scamper to tie the game at seven.

The Cardinals couldn’t fully regain their momentum. Ireton’s redzone issues began before halftime when an effective two-minute offense was derailed by penalties in the redzone and the Cardinals ‘ 28-yard field goal went wide left.

The second half would be marred by missed chances by the Cardinals who had several chances to build their lead, but Ireton missed another missed field goal. And O’Connell junior defensive back Kamrin Moore intercepted Zingler in the endzone and returned it 100 yards to seemingly tie the game at 14. But a block in the back penalty would wipe the score off the board.

Its just the way the afternoon went for the Knights who couldn’t capitalize on the extra opportunities. O’Connell had two critical fumbles in the second half, one of which set up a 17 yard drive by the Cardinals, which Zingler capped with a 6-yard quarterback draw to give Ireton the decisive points.

Cardinals (1-0) make their first road trip Saturday, September 10th when they travel to Bullis for a 7pm kickoff with the Bulldogs (1-0).  The Falls Road school returns a punishing ground game that controlled the ball against Ireton last fall and eked out a 20-17 win in Potomac.  That contest featured a “trick play” by the Bulldogs that fooled Ireton and the officials who whistled dead what turnout out to be a 60 yard touchdown run.  Kickoff is 7pm.
