Paul VI tops Bishop Ireton, 57-43

Senior Ty Quarles scored the game's first 5 points in Ireton's 57-43 setback to the area's top ranked team Friday.

Father Godley Gym is gaining the reputation for being a tough venue for boys basketball opponents.  Paul VI (3-0, 2-0) built a lead in the second quarter only to see it dissolve in the third quarter before finally distancing themselves from the pesky Cardinals, 57-43 Friday night.

“We played very well,” commented Ireton head coach, Neil Berkman.  “Not many teams are going to play PVI closer than 15 this season, they are that good a good basketball team.”  Indeed, the Panthers came into Friday’s contest on the heels of a 95-40 pasting of Good Counsel the night before.

Senior Ty Quarles got the crowd roaring early scoring the game’s first five points.  The squads traded baskets with Ireton (2-1, 0-1) clinging to the advantage through most of the opening period before PVI edged ahead 18-16 at the end of one.  The Panthers got untracked in the second while smothering the redbirds and a 12-4 stanza sent the clubs to the locker room with the visitors leading 30-20.

Ireton’s Jeremiah Brooks’ jumper pulled the Cardinals to within 33-31 late in the third quarter, capping an 11-3 run for the home team, but Paul VI promptly responded with 5 of Kevin Dorsey’s 14 points to extend their margin to 38-31 as the teams headed into the final period.  The Panthers outscored Ireton in the 4th period by a 19-12 count to win going away in Alexandria.

The Cardinals were led by senior Dan Noe with 16 while Ty Quarles had a season high 14, Patrick Moseh added 6, Jamie Senff 5, and Brooks had 2.  Marcus Derrickson also had 16 for the Panthers,  Dorsey 14, and Quadree Smith added 6.

Archbishop Carroll visits Godley Gym Tuesday evening, tipoff slated for 7:30pm.

Noe’s 25 leads Cardinals past Huskies, 68-64

Senior Dan Noe (3) led the Cardinals with 25 points in the win over Flint Hill Wednesday.

The Cardinals defeated Flint Hill 68-64 in a thriller that see sawed through an action packed contest.  On a two-pointer from Patrick Moseh, the Cardinals gave Ireton its lead in the fourth quarter with :07 remaining in the contest.  Dan Noe sealed the win after a Husky turnover with a pair of free throws with just over 1 second to play.

The Cardinals and Flint Hill were tied up at 30-30 at the half, but the Cardinals gained some steam during the final two quarters.  The Cardinals had a solid finish, adding 21 points in the final quarter. With a total of 23 fouls,  Flint Hill was on the attack over the course of the game.

Daniel Noe had a big night from the field, making 64% (7-for-11) of shots attempted as well as 67% (4-for-6) of threes attempted.  He also shot well from the line, making 88% (7-for-8) of free throws attempted.  Patrick Moseh poured in 20 and Jamie Senff added 11 for the Cardinals.   Jeremiah Brooks (7 points), Ty Quarles (3) and Nicholas Schmelzer (2) rounded out the Ireton scoring.

Also putting points on the board for Flint Hill were Matt Kennedy (7 points), Britton Anderson (4), Dillon Foley (2), Tyler Femi (2) and Will Peterson (2).

Unofficially, the home team outrebounded the Oakton visitors by a 30-22 margin and shot a blistering 50% from the field compared to the 43% the Huskies earned on 56 field goal attempts.

The  Cardinals ( 2-0) have perhaps their biggest challenge of the home season when they open the WCAC schedule with the Washington Post’s top ranked Panthers of Paul VI, who are making their annual visit to Godley Gym.  Tripleheader action begins at 4pm with freshmen, the varsity tipoff is slated for 7:30.  Advanced ticket sales are available in the Bishop Ireton athletic department 8am to 5pm.

Titans Upend Cardinal girls, 63-42

Ireton's Michele Montgomery (24) led the Cardinals in scoring with 11.

TC Willliams used a 14-4 run late in the second period to blow open a tight game and win going away, 63-42 in the Titan’s gym Tuesday night.  The setback drops Ireton to 0-2 on the young campaign and was the opener for the host Titans.

The Cardinals, with a pair of injured players returning to the squad started well in the game’s opening period, breaking to a 14-11 advantage after one.  The teams see-sawed back and forth in the second stanza, Ireton holding  their final lead of the contest at 20-17.  Then the Titan counterattack began and TC retired to the locker room at intermission with a comfortable 31-22 bulge.

“I saw a lot of improvement tonight, we were much better than last night.” commented head coach Derek Campbell.  “They switched from a zone to a man-to-man late in the second period and that threw us off.  We will fix that.”

Sophomore Michele Montgomery led the Cardinals with 11, classmate Shannon Corridon added 8.  Senior Isabelle Kendall had 5 points for Ireton and senior Kelly Gallagher came off the bench to add 4, as did Danielle Hatchett.  The Titans’ Angie Schedler had 17 to lead all scorers, Tykera Carter chipped in 15, and Rejoice Spivey had 8 for the winners.

Bishop Ireton heads to the Flint Hill Tip Off tournament on Friday and Saturday in Oakton. The Cardinals square off with St Anne’s Belfield at 3pm.

Cardinals Upended in Girls Hoops Opener, 43-30

Senior Isabelle Kendall (13) and junior Danielle Hatchett each scored 10 to lead the Cardinals in their season-opening 43-30 setback to Woodrow Wilson Monday in Alexandria.

Woodrow Wilson’s Tigers spoiled the season opener for Bishop Ireton Monday night in Godley Gym, 43-30.  For the Cardinals is was too many fouls, too many turnovers, and not enough field goals.

The Tigers, (1-0) led by Mercedes Suarez’s game-high 17 points, broke to a 10-2 first quarter lead and cruised into the fourth quarter with a comfortable margin. Only in the opening moments of the final quarter did the Cardinals make a run, closing to within 5 points when Danielle Hatchett made a pair of free throws at 33-28.  The DC public school responded with a 9-0 run and coasted home for the win.

After trailing 10-2 in the first quarter, Ireton did pick up the scoring in the second stanza, being outscored 12-10 and going into intermission at 22-12. Wilson widened the lead to 33-19 before the Cardinals had their own run of 9-0 to threaten early in the final quarter.

Isabelle Kendall and Danielle Hatchett led the home team with 10 points each but the Cardinals managed to only shoot 20% from the field while going 10 for 15 from the free throw line.  Wilson struggled from the charity stripe but compensated by going to the line 29 times, making but 13.  Ireton committed 25 fouls on the evening to 18 for the visiting Tigers.

Bishop Ireton heads up the street to TC Williams for a rare matchup with the state’s largest enrolled public high school.  The tripleheader begins with a 4pm freshmen contest with JV and varsity contests to follow.

Bishop Ireton holds on for 50-47 win in boys basketball

Coach Neil Berkman begins his 5th season at Bishop Ireton, coming off the School's best season in more than 25 years in 2012-13.

Senior leadership is an invaluable commodity and Ireton’s four seniors led the Cardinals to an opening day win over cross-town rival, Episcopal 50-47 when the Maroon couldn’t get a good shot  in their final possession.

“I think we played hard, I liked our effort, but we have to find a way to close out an opponent.” remarked coach Neil Berkman who begins his fifth season.  “Jamie Senff played a great game,  I was glad to see that, and Episcopal was a tough opener.”

Senff, sidelined for much of the 2012-13 season, one of the School’s most successful basketball campaigns, led the Cardinals with 16 points, many from down low in “the paint”.  Patrick Moseh added 14, senior Dan Noe 10.  Episcopal’s Greg Malinowski led all scorers with 19, but was the only visitor to score in double figures for Coach Jim Fitzpatrick.

The redbirds clung to a narrow 9-7 lead after a period of play in Godley Gym and took a 30-20 advantage to intermission on the strength of a 21 point second quarter, more points than they would score in the entire second half.   Meanwhile, Episcopal regrouped coming out of the locker room and steadily chistled away at the lead throughout the second half on the hot shooting of Malinowski.

After a pair of missed free throws, the game came down to a final possession for the Maroon.  Coming out of a timeout, Ireton conceded a two-point layup as the visitors attacked the basket, only to see the ball roll off the rim. The ball was rebounded by the visitors, who frantically worked the ball to an open shooter, so much so that the final pass surprised every black jerseyed player and a desperate last second shot was well off the mark.

Bishop Ireton (1-0) returns to action with another challenging non conference opponent, the MAC’s Flint Hill, visiting Father Godley Gym on Wednesday for a tripleheader of basketball action, including the opener for freshmen and JV boys.   WCAC play begins Friday, when nationally ranked PVI visits Godley for their annual appearance.  Advanced tickets are available for the Paul VI game on Wednesday evening as well as at the door on Friday.

Bishop Ireton explodes in opening round soccer win, 7-0

Senior Diego Rosende (6) was one of seven Cardinals to score in their opening round win in WCAC playoff action.

Coach Jon Norem’s boys soccer team opened the 2013 WCAC playoffs in grand style with a dominating 7-0 win over Archbishop Carroll on Monday at Ireton’s Fannon Field.

The Cardinals didn’t allow a Lion shot on goal until the second half when the game was all but decided.  Senior Andrew Perham and freshman Matt Poling combined to whitewash the visitors from Washington, DC, each keeper seeing a half of action.  The Cardinals poured 17 shots on goal in the game, the Lions managed a pair.

Kyle Delaney found Joey Faddoul in the game’s 11th minute and the honorably mentioned, all conference sophomore staked the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead. Faddoul would earn an assist moments later when senior, second team all conference performer, Spencer Amarantides made it 2-0.  Three minutes later, Preston Haugh, another  second teamer in the WCAC made it 3-0 and the home team was rolling.

Junior Henson Webre opened the second half scoring to balloon the lead to 4-0.  Diego Rosende, Nick Ducceschi, and Gabby Sampaio rounded out the scoring for the home team, who now faces the perennial powerhouse, #2 seeded Gonzaga on Tuesday. Kickoff is 3pm on Long Bridge Field #3.  The winner advances to the semifinals on Thursday.  In the regular season matchup, the teams tied at 1-1, each converting a penalty kick in regulation. That time there was no overtime, in this matchup there will be a winner.

Ireton girls tie top-ranked Good Counsel, 1-1

Naval Academy-bound Natalia Barrow (23) has anchored the back line for the Cardinals for much of the past 2 seasons.

“I should be doing cartwheels because of the way we played, but we also feel like we let one get away tonight.” said head coach Gino Leon after top-ranked Good Counsel used a second half tally to escape with a 1-1 tie Tuesday in Olney.

Bishop Ireton controlled the ball and play for much of the contest against the Falcons, who played the game without Imani Dorsey, arguably the conference’s top player.  Sophomore Lilly Weber, one of the Conference’s best young players, took a pass from WCAC all conference player, Adrienne Maday, and gave the redbirds a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

“We really felt like we dominated the play, we played our game.  One lapse was the difference.” lamented the Ireton skipper. He suggested the unsung heroines of the game also included senior Natalia Barrow and goalkeeper Amy Krotine as well as the forwards on the offensive side of the field.  “It hurts to be that close.” commented Leon.

Little time to reflect on the game in the tightly packed WCAC standings. While the Falcons sit in the top spot in the league, they host second  place O’Connell in their season finale on Tuesday with the top seed in the tournament on the line. Holy Cross sits in the third seat, but Ireton finishes the season with its two competitors for the fourth, or possibly third place, with St Johns on Friday and Paul VI on Wednesday. A pair of wins and a slip up by the Tartans and the Cardinals could finish as high as third. If Ireton falters, they could fall as far as 6th.

Game time for the Senior Day contest Friday is 4pm on Fannon Field with the JV tilt to follow.  Cardinals will end the regular season when they host Paul VI Wednesday at Witter Street Fields. Both contests are 4pm starts with PVI.

Falcons escape on late goal to tie Cardinal boys, 1-1

Sophomore Preston Haugh (8) scored Ireton's first half goal in a 1-1 tie with Good Counsel.

For the much of the first 60 minutes of Bishop Ireton’s boys soccer game with second place Good Counsel, the Falcons struggled to mount sustained offensive pressure in the Cardinals’ end of the field while trailing 1-0.  Once they did it still didn’t produce results until the game’s last 240 seconds, when an Alassandro Burlew finished a wild scramble in the box following a corner kick to get Good Counsel on the scoreboard with 2:44 seconds remaining in the contest.

For the Cardinals, it was another strong performance by arguably the league’s most improved team over the past two years. After Andrew Perham’s sprawling save, Ireton regrouped and Preston Haugh kicked a knuckling shot on net that handcuffed the ‘keeper to give the home team a 1-0 lead.  Moments later Haugh blasted another shot on net, but was denied the chance to widened the lead.

Early in the second half both teams had opportunities, Nick Ducceschi got an open look that was turned away and the Falcons replied with a shot on a sharp angle that hit the goalpost and richoceted away all in the period’s first 4 minutes. The teams sparred in midfield and exchanged rushes into the offensive zones until Good Counsel began to press the Cardinals in the half’s closing moments, leading to the tying marker.  Even at that the game ended with Bishop Ireton deep in the Falcons’ zone pushing for the game winner as the whistle sounded.

The Cardinals, battling Ryken, PVI, and St Johns for a #4 seed in the upcoming championship tournament, have a pair of key games to end the season. They travel to St Johns on Friday for a 4pm start and end the regular season WCAC play on Wednesday at Paul VI.  Two wins could secure a possible home playoff date, losses could push them as low as 6th and a trip to Olney to face the Falcons on their pitch.
